Third shift had a whole world of its own—and the inmates weren’t the only ones with stories.
My novel, When the Cell Door Closes: The Stories the Walls Never Tell, is inspired by my own experiences working inside an Atlanta metro jail. It follows Keisha, a mother working third shift, raising her children, and rebuilding her life while navigating the friendships, personalities, and unexpected situations that fill her nights.
There’s humor. There’s heartbreak. There’s workplace drama. But there’s also compassion, accountability, and the reminder that a person’s circumstances don’t tell their whole story.
I wanted to bring readers into a world they may never have experienced while giving them something familiar to connect with—the desire for stability, the responsibility of motherhood, the mistakes we learn from, and the relationships that shape us.
Although this is fiction, its foundation is personal. Names, identifying details, and events have been changed or fictionalized to protect privacy and serve the story.
My hope is that you’ll find moments to laugh, pause, reflect, and see someone differently.
